Ron Paul on the Issues

I’m not a Ron Paul supporter and I couldn’t see myself voting for him but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t consider doing so. Instead of listening to the Republican hype machine I decided to look into the issues. I vote for candidates on the issues and not just what they claim to support but what their voting record proves. I’m not really concerned about whether a politician inhaled or not; my concern is if they stand where I do. I stand for issues that are obviously Republican and according to most politicians on the Republican side in this race Ron Paul is a Republican is disguise. Ron isn’t hiding that though, he will tell you himself that he is a constitutionalist not a Republican. Alright, that’s fair enough. So let’s look at the issues instead of the news with full fledged beer goggles.
I’m going to present my top issues. I’ll list resources at the end of the blog where you can research further but for the sake of the readers I will post my top issues when voting. I emphasize my because I don’t want you thinking I don’t believe there are other important issues just what affects my personal beliefs.
Abortion.
Abortion is the first thing I look into when voting for someone. I don’t agree with the philosophy of “freedom of choice” because the choice violates someone else’s choice to live; the child’s. When it comes to Abortion Ron stacks up very nicely for conservatives. He voted to ban partial-birth abortion, voted no to adult stem cell research and no to federal funding of abortion. My only problem is that he voted no on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime (Feb 2004). In time of elections it’s very important to look at the politicians political record because people like Mitt Romney will flip-flop to win the vote.

Ron Paul on Abortion on his official site.Iraq War.
I don’t agree with Ron on this, this is probably where he gets tossed in the bucket with Democrats.
Quote on the Iraq war; “If General Petraeus’ strategy is not working so far in September, what do you do then?”
Paul: “The sooner we come home, the better. If they declare there’s no progress in September, we should come home. It was a mistake to go, so it’s a mistake to stay. If we made the wrong diagnosis, we should change the treatment. The weapons weren’t there, and we went in under U.N. resolutions. And our national security was not threatened. We’re more threatened now by staying.”Ron stand tail to tail with Democrats on this issue. He is basically echoing what Edwards or Obama would say. Considering the ties Iraq carried to terrorism the attack of Iraq was by far the right thing to do. With the rest of the world in agreement America did what it needed to and now that things have gotten thick everyone wants to change their mind and run home. Paul was always against the war which concerns me, what will he do if Iran continues to seek nuclear weapons? I don’t think the UN will help much if we’re looking at a psychopath with a nuke. Ron misses this one for me, I agree we need to finish the job but running for cover is not the answer.
Gay Marriage.
This is the last one on the list. I definitely take into account taxes and a candidates record on crime but this is an important one. Considering the rise of immorality in America you are bound to see this issue popping around again soon or later. Considering a very small percentage of American’s are gay this shouldn’t even be an issue. If gay marriage is ever legalized you will see the day that our “for the people” system of government will have failed. In a country where activist judges make laws for their own personal stances and not what America actually stands for we need to protect our most valuable institutions before they are all re-written for a small majority. Ron is definitely mixed slightly on this but definitely misses the target for me. He voted several times against banning gay marriage but strangely voted yes to ban gay adoption. Dr. Paul won’t be getting my vote unless he actually wins the nomination which isn’t very likely. So, there are a few top issues. Even though he showed a little light at the beginning with abortion he swerves in the liberal lane with everything else.
