Recapping the Debate

Loading ...Last night’s debate was surely for the Conservative voters and no one else. I thought the debate was nice but it was trying it’s best to be a Christian debate and not a Values Voter debate. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see anything wrong with God questions but this debate was a God parade. Every single question was asked as if the host was asking themselves “WWJD”. Sometimes you can really over due it and I think that’s exactly what they did. I’m not looking for the most spiritual Presidential candidate, if that were the case I’d surely pick Alan Keyes who seemed to be preaching rather than debating. Don’t get me wrong, Alan seems like a great guy but there’s no way with his extreme religious talk that he can appeal to the majority.
Appeal isn’t everything but it’s definitely something. The debate was a tired three hours long and seemed to ask the same questions over and over in different wording. I had a hard time understanding the need to reiterate multiple times the need to stand against the gay community. Don’t get me wrong, I have my personal views against it but I’m not ready to start a war against them. Marriage is one thing but they seemed to make it their agenda, America is about more than gay marriage. I always hate that the debates don’t talk enough about moral issues but this debate went over kill, it was poorly managed. Also, what was with asking questions to candidates that weren’t there? I’m sure a few had good reasons and Mitt Romney’s camp has even stated they plan to attend a future event.
Mike Huckabee was great as always and he won the votes by a large majority. A couple people present confused me however; mainly John Cox. Who is John Cox? Apparently he’s some guy running for President. I don’t know him and he seemed to like that, he thinks we should vote in somebody nobody knows and that is his Political backing. Alan Keyes was on a rampage to prove he was holier than everyone else. Ron Paul was impressive most of the night, he seemed to feel the need to scream about Iraq but he had several clever answers. One can easily write off Ron Paul but I wouldn’t do that, he has a lot to offer even if you disagree with his war stance. I know terrorism is a huge issue but I have my opinions on that, part of me wonders what kind of defense we could build for the money we are spending fighting in Iraq. This type of debate is for another day and I will digress!
As a moral voter I am satisfied with yesterdays debate but I feel it lacked substance. They should have talked about more than gays and abortion, it was a values voter debate but it was also three hours of the same questions. There was very little talk about education, another topic that is always set on the shelf. America knows where these candidates stand already and there needs to be something more interesting. We’ve have several debates and they have made their opinions clear. I want to see something different, ask the tough questions but make sure we’re hearing something new. I highly doubt three hours was necessary for this situation. I give Huckabee the thumbs up on this one, Brownback a worthy second and Paul a slightly distant third.
