Is Newt The Next Thompson?

When Thompson came rolling around I knew what the message was, “all these candidates are here and they are boring, Fred to the rescue!” So now there’s Newt, the latest ‘maybe’ candidate on the block. In a recent piece on RedState.com, they are discussing Newt’s appearance on Rush Limbaugh’s show today. Newt told Rush that he is completely focused on his American Solutions workshops that are coming up on September 29th but he also says that his advisers would begin looking at public interest in him running for President. If you ask me, all the checking and gauging sounds like an exploratory committee. Should we expect an announcement sooner than later? Early evidence was showing that Newt was going to run for sure but since then it has been up in the air. I imagine he will take his time, as Thompson did, to make sure it is the right decision.
So, will he run?Redstate points out that his chances of running are slim and that he will most likely get behind another candidate instead. They believe he will end up deciding that his best chance to affect the race would be to stay out and stamping one of the three with his conservative approbation. With an already saturated field I would have to agree, there is pretty much every type of candidate you would wish to vote for. I wouldn’t say that Newt’s pull is as great as Thompson’s was when there was speculation surrounding him, but I’m sure we will no for sure in a short amount of time as speculation grows. That might be because of the already flooded ballet or people are already tired of 2008 but I’m sure he will consider all of this when making his decision; nobody wants to waste money on a dead end campaign and I’m sure he won’t want to either.
The Field is Saturated EnoughThe Republican party is rather diverse, with candidates on most sides of the issues. Rudy is a Republican that supports the war but also supports gay marriage and abortion. McCain is a moderate that is a strong supporter of the war but likely to sway from Democratic to Republican positions on different topics. Paul is a strongly against the Iraq war, pro-life candidate who has a Democratic appeal with his “change America” and “Bush is evil” attitude. Then you have Huckabee and Brownback, candidates that are both strongly religious, pro-life and family centered candidates. Of course you also have your star power candidates Romney and Thompson. Tancredo is the “ship them home” candidate and wants to close the borders completely. There, of course, are people that fit with the other candidates as well, Hunter would fit with McCain on the war mentality and Tancredo with his strong boarder control stance. Now there’s Alan Keyes, a candidate who is strongly religious and will have his share of supporters and opposers alike. So maybe Newt will run but I’m sure most people will see that it is not a necessary move.
