The Democrats’ Love Affair with Universal Health Care.

Hillarycare is not the answer. One thing that is for sure, Democrats want universal health care and will use that on their platform as a top issue. With America’s high quality health care system you should expect it to dive tremendously if a universal system were put into place. Forcing the entire population of America to pay billions in taxes to cover all Americans is not a reasonable option, it’s not about keeping it from the poor it’s about realistic logistics. Even though “free” health care sounds wonderful, the word “free” should not be in front of health care. Canada’s health care system is riddled with low-quality service while American health care is among the best in the world. Perhaps the Democrats don’t care, they are pushing for mediocre care for all of us instead of great care for those that can afford it. What they seem to ignore is the fact that we do have government assisted health care, my wife is covered fully by this and it paid for her entire pregnancy as well as my son’s birth. Not bad if you ask me.

A look at the Democratic Presidential Candidates on Health Care.

Taking a look at Hillary Clinton’s website today; I noticed her health care plan staring me in the face. Hillary’s plan will cost $110,000,000,000 (that’s a 110 billion folks); something that would end up destroying the quality of our system. She cutely calls this plan “American Health Choice”. However, the problem with this plan is part of how she plans to pay for it. Of course she plans to tax you to death but she will also be removing the Bush tax cuts, something that will most likely end in disaster. Even though the Democrats love to attack the rich, it is a fact that they (the top %25) pay %85 of all taxes. So it’s easy for her plan to look intriguing to those not in the top %50 (which pay %96 of taxes) because you won’t be feeling the burden. Let Rush explain it to you.

Other Democratic Candidates on Health Care.

    Summaries from washingtonpost.com.

-Delaware Sen. Joe Biden: Expand health insurance to cover all children and to make catastrophic care available for all; look to states for ideas on moving toward universal coverage.

-Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd: Expand coverage by offering insurance that could be taken from job to job, with premiums based on ability to pay. No cost estimates offered for plan. Offer coverage similar to that in plan for federal employees.

-Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards: Achieve mandatory universal coverage by 2012 with a system of expanded federal health insurance, family tax credits and coverage requirements on employers, insurance companies and individuals. Increase taxes to pay for program’s cost of up to $120 billion a year.

-Ohio Rep. Dennis Kucinich: Favors national health insurance program covering medical, dental, mental health and long-term care for all, as well as prescription drugs. “My plan doesn’t provide for a role for for-profit insurance companies.”

-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama: Require employers to share costs of insuring workers and ensure all children are covered. Offer coverage similar to that in plan for federal employees. Says package would cost up to $65 billion a year after unspecified savings from making system more efficient. Raise taxes to pay the cost.

-New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: Tax breaks for businesses and for people who pay for their own coverage. Lower the eligibility age for Medicare to 55 and expand programs for poor and children. Package could cost up to $110 billion a year. Would seek savings in medical care by expanding spending on preventive care.

So, Who Wins If Health Care Goes Universal?

I don’t think there are any winners in such a situation. Sure, you could be happy to know that you would be able to get medical attention whenever you needed it, most likely after being on a waiting list for months on end. On the other hand, with government aid already widely available, the cost to tax payers and to the quality of health care is not worth it. There is a gap of people who make too much money to get free health care but don’t make enough to pay for their own and that needs to be resolved. The solution shouldn’t be a $110 billion dollar plan, the solution would be to find a way to cover the gap without crippling tax payers or the system. Making a plan that covers an entire population that doesn’t necessarily need it is a waste of tax payer dollars. All Americans need insurance and if it’s possible we should figure out affordable options instead of handing out health care that is tainted because the competitive field is gone. We should find a reasonable, not irrational manner to fix this issue.
