The latest from the “surrender now” Democrats is a ingenious scheme. Three top House Democrats are proposing a “war surtax” to fund the war and burden the tax system. Democratic leadership say they’ll oppose any spending bills that don’t include a plan to end the 4-year-old conflict. Under this surtax proposal, taxpayers would have to pay extra taxes, ranging from 2% to 15% based on income which is designed to raise $140 billion a year for the conflict.“If the president really is concerned about stopping red ink, we are prepared to introduce legislation which will provide for a war surtax for that portion of military costs that are related to our military actions in Iraq,” Rep. David Obey, the Wisconsin Democrat who chairs the House Appropriations Committee, says, according to Reuters.
Their latest plan looks to burden tax payers with outrageous charges. Instead of funding our soldiers, which would allow us to properly fight the war, they want to play partisan politics which will inevitably damage our economy as well as our military efforts. It’s not about paying for the war, the Democrats know if they take swings at America’s tax payers that they can stir up more anti-war advocates for their cause.
“If you don’t like the cost, then shut down the war,” Obey just told reporters on Capitol Hill. He was joined by Reps. John Murtha of Pennsylvania and James McGovern of Massachusetts.
Update from Michelle Malkin, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino dismissed the surtax proposal.
“We’ve always known that Democrats seem to revert to type and they are willing to raise taxes on just about anything,” she says. “There’s no need to increase taxes. The president has shown how if we prioritize and if we get the spending bills done in a clean way, we can actually have a surplus in our budget by 2012. We don’t see any need to raise the taxes.”
It seems the Democrats will take whichever route that is necessary to undermine the war effort. They can’t pass anything that will cause Bush to pull the troops out as quickly as possible so they try whichever dirty tactics that they can to damage the effort as much as possible. Instead of passing bills that are needed to fund our troops they will slap on as much pork spending as they can. That’s not enough, they are now moving to raise taxes that would end up hurting our economy as well as the war effort. What’s next?
