Mrs. Fields Says "Bah, Humbug" To Christmas. Updated.

  • Scrooge300med I have to ask this question. It seriously confuses me whenever "Company A" stops saying "Christmas" because it supposedly offends someone. I don’t buy it, how many people are truly offended by Christmas? If so, why? I have several friends who are atheists, Christmas doesn’t bother them, on the contrary they enjoy it as much as the next person. Christmas has become so secular you can celebrate Christmas without even thinking about God. Seriously, who is offended by Christmas and why?

Muslims don’t seem to mind Jesus. Maybe they have a secret hatred towards him and yeah the extremists hate us but all I ever hear is good stuff. If a Muslim is offended he must not be from this country, if he was born here he would have been brought up in the same secular Christmas I was. I wasn’t raised a believer, we were a poor family, but we still celebrated every year and it’s all good feelings.

Christmas is about good food, friends and family, presents, pretty decorations and good times. For me, yeah, it’s about Jesus and God’s gift to the world. But If you’re not a Christian why should Christmas offend? Turn on the TV and your more than likely to see the secular version than our version anyway. It’s either St. Nick with Rudolph or Frosty the Snowman. Seriously, lighten up you 2% of people offended by something light hearted and seriously watered down by secularists.

The reason I bring this up is because the American Family Association (AFA) is reporting that Mrs. Fields has banned "Christmas" from their product line because "they don’t want to offend anyone." Mrs. Fields sells cookies, who are they offending, those annual atheist party goers that buy their cookies like their’s no tomorrow? How did they come to this conclusion? Did they find the most extreme person that works for their company? You know, that person that hates babies and thinks life is horrible to begin with so why celebrate anything? This is stupid, most of the "Christmas" stuff that "offends" people is secular and in no way related to Christ. How is a Christmas tree offensive when it’s a tree that has nothing to do with Jesus? So it seems people are offended by secularism taking over Christmas?

If you are offended by Christmas you need to lighten up and start enjoying it like the rest of you non-believers did when you were growing up.

Update: They have changed their minds it seems.

I am so upset by this issue… but for different reasons than you may think.

I have a very good friend who works for the call center for Mrs. Fields Cookies. She called me in tears because she knows I’m an activist and track with these issues.

    Here are the facts:
    * Mrs. Fields website (until yesterday) did not have any Christmas cookies for sale.
    * The reason the Xmas cookies were not for sale: because its October! and they don’t go on sale until November 1st.
    * The lady who called Mrs. Fields was looking for a fight, very rude and misunderstood the facts.
    * AFA, bless their hearts, had a knee-jerk reaction sent out an alert to their millions of subscribers indicating that Mrs. Fields was banning Christmas.

Now, my friend is having to deal with hundreds of phone calls from upset people reacting in a very un-Christian way.

The AFA does so much good… but this was a real black eye. I hope they have the good sense to retract this.

Interesting, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight. I guess jumping the gun in the worse thing we can do, it seemed like the company had made a decision early on not to have anything Christmas but from what you’re saying that’s not the case.

Most people move on easily and I’m sure it will be the same here.

I know someonw who works at Mrs. Fields, with the online products. Jumped the gun sums it up well. The Christmas products have always been in the plan, the only change is the homepage now has to have a Christmas message to keep down the hate mail - instead of showing Halloween gifts. Last I checked, Halloween is the next big cookie sending event on the calendar.

    Thanks for the confusion AFA.

    Jumped the gun is right!
I work for a franchisee of Mrs. Fields’ Famous Brands (the parent company of Mrs. Field’s Cookies.) Our franchisee operates Great American Cookies stores, (Mrs. Field’s operates 3 brands-Mrs. Fields, Great American, and Original Cookie Co.) I have worked for the company for over 17 years, and we have featured the word “Christmas” prominently year after year in our in store marketing materials, cookie cakes shown in the our showcases, on the websites, as well as Christmas designs for our cakes in the brochures which we pass out to customers inquiring about our products. The following letter was sent out to all franchisees regarding this incident:
This week, a woman from Michigan called the Mrs. Fields customer service line to inquire about Christmas gifts from Mrs. Fields Cookies. She was incorrectly told that Mrs. Fields will not be selling or promoting Christmas specific items this year, and instead would be focusing on Holiday items as to not offend anyone. Once hearing this, she quickly spread this false information. This miscommunication by the employee has been addressed, and we’ve been assured by the head of the customer service center that this error in communication will not occur again.

As we have for the last 30 years, Mrs. Fields strives to provide only the best indulgent treats and gifts for all of our customers’ needs. We will continue to do this during the upcoming holiday season by offering a wide variety of holiday items including Christmas specific gifts and treats.

Additionally, we are taking some internal steps to insure that the 2007 Holiday selling season is one of our best!

    · We are creating a standard outgoing email for all customers who inquired about the Mrs. Fields Christmas gifts alerting them to the initial miscommunication and getting them excited for the November 1st launch of our holiday season.

    · We have posted a note on Mrsfields.com previewing the 2007 Holiday product line including Christmas items

    · We have sent a note onto the original organization who spread the information with our apologies of the miscommunication and they are helping us to broadcast that it was a miscommunication.

As you know, Mrs. Fields is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, and is looking forward to a successful holiday season. Again, based on our original marketing plan, we will formally introduce the 2007 holiday selling season both in-store and online in early November 2007.

As usual, everyone needs to take big step back and not get so bent out of shape. The biggest problem in America is not that retailers don’t keep Christ in Christmas—it’s that Christians don’t keep Christ at the forefront of their actions.

As point of clarification–the last paragraph in my comments above are my own thoughts, and not those of Mrs Fields, its’ related companies, or franchisees.
