Putting “Care” Back Into “Health Care.”

Glenn Beck’s mishap has brought my site a lot of traffic, hello friends! Hopefully you are enjoying the site and are finding some interesting things to read. If you haven’t read up on what happened to Glenn Beck you can read part 1 and part 2. Thanks for stopping by!You can read the latest article written by Glenn on his “experience” by going here.
Glenn’s whole experience reveals sad truths that expand beyond the hospital rooms. Compassion is something that plenty of humans lack. Anything that causes them inconvenience will most likely be ignored. The people Glenn speaks of are sad human beings who obviously have no respect for human life. Working in a hospital day in and day out has obviously drained any bit of compassion that they had. When they walk in and see a man wailing because of pain they more than likely don’t care, they see it all the time. It’s a sad case but people can be very heartless, “I’m not going to care because my needs are my only priority.”
Should it be different because they are working where people need them the most? Without a doubt, if you’re occupation is to help others than you definitely should care and, well, help them. This is why you hear stories of the elderly being abused in retirement homes and why you are hearing about this now. The human condition is to become hard and heartless. The human being at it’s core is a caring species but we can be very cold and compassionless at times without a doubt. The large man who didn’t help Glenn was probably thinking, “man I don’t want to work any harder than I have to, I have a break in ten minutes, I can’t wait to get out of here.” Heartless, careless and 100% not surprising.
Working at a job that deals with the public 24/7 has allowed me to see how people treat strangers. The mind set of those that come in are always “get what I need and get out,” and I’m just “the stupid kid who isn’t doing what I want when I want so I’m going to ruin his day and then report him so he gets yelled at.” This is how it is and sadly, putting the “care” back into “health care” is impossible. People are inherently good but that everyday stranger is not their loved ones or someone to care about.
This next story is a perfect example of the “it’s not my job to care” attitude that people have. I was out exercising on my bike that I had just bought earlier that day, I hadn’t exercised for awhile and was very out of shape. I made the mistake of pushing myself too hard and rode rougher than I should have. I was very tired but kept going, after I climbed another rather large hill I finally came to a stop and my body began to let me know that it wasn’t very happy. I set my bike down and started to catch my breath, within a few minutes of extreme panting things started to get blurry. All of a sudden everything got very bright and all I could see was white. I collapsed next to my bike, perhaps for a few seconds but when I came to everything was still white and I was sweating like a beast. After ten minutes or so I was able to catch my breath a little and could see just enough to walk. I got up and headed towards the entrance of the K-Mart that I had just passed out in front of while twenty or more people more than likely watched and thought “it’s not my problem.”
At that moment I didn’t know what was happening to me. Sure it was most likely heat exhaustion or perhaps something worse but I was scared of the unknown and absolutely no one seemed to care. It was in the middle of the day, no later than 4:00 PM and absolutely no one asked me if I was ok. After blindly walking into the store I accidentally bumped into someone, to which he said, “watch where you’re going.” I continued back to get water, blind, staggering and in pain. No one cared and no one wasted their time to see if I was dying.
Hospitals should be different but the fact is that they aren’t. People may become a nurse or a doctor because they care but the truth is heartless fools are everywhere and hospitals aren’t any different. Hospitals need to be tougher on this issue and it surely is their responsibility. We have spent so much time arguing about the price of health care that we never talk about the quality of health care. When that old lady screams at my boss because her lunch meat wasn’t thin enough what happens? I get a reprimand, I get in trouble and I’m sure that old lady is hoping I get fired. People are heartless, they are cold and sadly love is not given to mere strangers like us.
This is a gloomy look at this issue and I know it’s not the case all the time. Sadly these worse case scenarios are what you hear about. Do the world a favor, smile a little more, care a lot more and treat that strange guy at the counter like you want to be treated. You know, that crazy old “golden rule.”
