Fred Thompson Clearly The Conservative Choice

Whether you like McCain for his diplomacy, Huckabee for his charm or Giuliani for his strength you have to admit that they all leave a little bit to be desired. McCain is not a candidate worthy of the Republican nomination, very moderate and far too soft to manage this country. It’s true that is he tough on terrorism but when it comes to immigration he is soft as can be. Huckabee has a lot of good things to say, he can fill a whole hour with little catch phrases and swoon almost any evangelical. However, his past is riddled with so much garbage it’s safe to say he is one of the most liberal Republicans running. Then you have Giuliani, a strong candidate that ran New York wonderfully and carried that state through one of the toughest times in American history. However, Giuliani is socially liberal and I am afraid of what he might do with abortion laws and he just may kill the pro-life movement where it stands.Where does that leave the Reagan coalition? Is there absolutely any hope for a well rounded conservative in 2008? Will we be stuck with what Rush Limbaugh called the “new conservatism?” I don’t want someone that will effectively split social and fiscal conservatives. Giuliani is making social conservatives nauseous and Huckabee is making everyone else very nervous. I know that Reagan was a one-of-a-kind conservative, he was a man that set the standard and no on will ever take his place. But we should be trying, we should not accept the most well spoken or the one person that is liberal enough to win.
Mitt Romney has been very impressive in his most recent debates. He has spoken clearly and has presented a very solid conservative candidacy. The only problem with Romney is his past, flip-flopping is not something that candidates can easily get away with. I can certainly say Romney is a conservative but he is having a hard time really convincing the pack. With the moderates leading the race at the moment it almost seems like this new conservatism is taking over. The new conservative is the new liberalism, it looks like conservatism but it sure doesn’t taste like it. It’s like Splenda, sure you can suffer it out but it’s just not the same as that good old sugar.
So that leaves us with Thompson. If you have twenty minutes I highly suggest listening to a video he made for Iowa voters. Thompson may not be able to swoon anyone with fantastic 30 second clips but he is by far the deepest and most conservative choice on the ballot. The only problem is that Thomspon is not getting any love from the networks. Those people are too busy airing Huckabee with his “we raised hope,” which he means “we raised taxes by $500m.” Just a thought, but, Huckabee sounds a lot like Obama with his “hope” talk doesn’t he? Just my opinion, well, mine and plenty of others as well.
If you’re looking for that true conservative choice, not the “new” conservative choice, check out Thompson before he gets passed by like other great candidates that have already dropped out (Hunter, Brownback, Tancredo..).
