Romney Wins Michigan

562560710_e7606abbe9.jpgCNN, Foxnews and MSNBC are all projecting that Romney will win Michigan. With that in mind it is safe for me to call it as well. This was a must win for Romney, considering the scattered wins so far he will have to continue on to win more but this should give him some momentum to do so.

The most important outcome of Michigan is that the McCain momentum may begin to cease. While a McCain win would have pushed his campaign into high gear, he is now left to pulling it off in South Carolina. While that is very possible it isn’t something that McCain can count on, the evangelical vote has been strongly Huckabee and South Carolina more than likely will go to him.

McCain will have a very hard time winning future states that are closed to independants and Democrats. Stats have been showing that, while he wins the independent vote, he isn’t pulling in the Republican vote. In closed primaries it’s obious that independents won’t help him any. Among conservative voters Romney has been attracting the most votes, this is crucial for obvious reasons.

I don’t expect McCain to rise in the polls beyond where he is at this point. To win the Republican nomination he can’t depend solely on the independent vote. Huckabee will have the same issue, conservative voters will not fall for his one-liners and will side for someone that is a conservative rather than a populist.

Only time will tell, but I think I can safely say it will soon be a Thompson-Romney battle as the core of the Republican party begins to speak for it’s self. We can only hope.
