Clinton vs. Obama is a Beautiful Thing

John McCain and recent bitter rival Mitt Romney have been campaigning together recently. They’ve been cracking jokes and doing their best to unite their party to ensure a victory this November. On the other side of the lane we have Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama locked into an intense and ugly nomination battle. It’s a beautiful thing. Recent polls show that McCain is benefiting from the bickering and that the Democratic party is at odds with one another. According to a recent Gallup poll, 28% of Hillary Clinton supporters who participated would vote for McCain over Obama. Barack Obama supporters also said that they would choose McCain over Clinton. While the actual amount of Democrats that defect for McCain will more than likely be no where near these numbers come election time the scuffle between the Democratic nominees is a beautiful thing for John McCain.

John McCain’s nomination is a hard pill to swallow for conservative voters. It’s nothing new that McCain is probably the last person from the Republican party that conservatives would pick if they had the choice to pick their ideal candidate. The recent support from Romney is nothing but evidence of party loyalty. It’s not extraordinary for a politician to support someone they spent the last year fighting against. Politics is politics. For the sake of the party a politician will fall in line for one another even if they mostly disagree with that person.

Barack Obama going up against Hillary Clinton is perhaps the best case scenario that the Republican party could have wished for. We are looking at two people that represent what the Democratic party is supposedly fighting for; minorities and women. The fact that a black man is leading the Democratic nomination is a wonderful thing. Disagreeing with Obama’s policies does not change the historical importance of his success. We have come a long way from the persecution of black men and women. It is also a testament to the progress that women have made in this country. Sexism and racism may not be a thing of the past but this is evidence of America growing up.

John McCain has been blessed with a head start. He has the time to mend the wounds that his fellow Republicans dished out during the nomination process. America’s short term memory will kick into effect after the nominations are complete and I don’t expect the Obama and Clinton contention to have much of a long term affect. The problems between conservatives and McCain will not be as easily dissolved. There is no magical speech or endorsement that will make conservatives comfortable with McCain. No matter what the end result may be, Clinton vs. Obama is a beautiful thing.
