Will Barr Spoil the Election for McCain?
-
You may be asking the exact some question I did when you heard about some guy named Barr running for president for the Libertarian party, “who?” Perhaps you haven’t even heard about the fact in the first place. Either way, Bob Barr, a former Congressman from Georgia, has thrown his hat into the race for the Presidency of the United States for the Libertarian party. It’s not certain whether or not Barr will cause a threat to McCain in the long run but it’s bound to cause some angst along the way for McCain’s campaign. Barr doesn’t seem capable of pulling in the conservative vote so he’s not someone for us to rally around. Listening to him speak and viewing his website reminds of another Presidential candidate that made some waves during this election year who just so happens to also be a Libertarian: Ron Paul. The second I saw Barr’s website I immediately thought of Ron Paul’s website. The design and function of the website is strangely familiar. It makes perfect sense considering the same company is responsible for both Barr’s and Paul’s website. This doesn’t really mean anything but with Paul scaling back his own campaign you have to wonder if Barr is meant to be Paul’s substitute. Could we possibly be looking at a Barr/Paul run for the white house? If this were to happen I think the question of “will Barr spoil McCain’s run for President” would be an emphatic “maybe.” Enough to win the election? Highly unlikely. Enough to cause him a loss? That’s a maybe as well. You can speculate it all you want but I have to say it sounds like an interesting theory.
Barr may be able to grab a percent or two of the vote but there’s no way anyone gets anywhere without money. Bob Barr isn’t the only third party candidate out there that has recently decided to run for the office. Ralph Nader, the thorn in the side of Democrats, is also hoping for some sort of miracle. Neither of these candidates are raising enough cash at this moment to be any sort of threat to either of the campaigns. They can wish upon a million stars but running for president costs a lot of money, I shouldn’t have to tell them that. According to OpenSecrets.com Nader has raised a measly $494,000 dollars thus far. I was unable to find any solid numbers for Barr but his website boasts a whopping $95,000 raised. They may get some air time and may be able pull in a percent or two at the voting booth but in the end they’re both wasting their time.
