Gas prices. They just keep getting higher. Every time I go past a gas station I am afraid to look at the sign because I fear the worse. At almost $4 in my area, western Pennsylvania, things are only getting worse. For someone on a very tight budget gasoline is quickly becoming a luxury rather than a necessity. I am lucky that I live five minutes from work because I may be walking very soon. I’m also glad that I have a car that is fairly fuel efficient. When I first got the car, about three months ago, it cost a little over $30 to fill. It has already went up $10 and costs me more than $40. When it comes down to it, I am going to have to choose between food or gasoline. I think I’ll choose food and lose some weight walking everywhere that I need to go.
This is one issue that we should all be fighting for. Conservative or liberal we all want lower gas prices. It’s easy for the rich to shrug it off but people like me can’t afford the ever bloating gas prices. Something realistic must be done and I’m not talking about halting the gas tax. The solution is simple and that is to drill more of our own oil. Going upon congress last Wednesday oil execs had to defend the outrageous prices and they got it right.
“We cannot change the world market,” said Robert Malone, chairman and president of BP America Inc. “Today’s high prices are linked to the failure both here and abroad to increase supplies, renewables and conservation.”
Congress can sit and complain all they want but they’re the ones not doing anything. Time and time again there have been efforts made to raise oil production and they have blocked it. They wonder why prices are so high. We are depending on others when we should be bringing our own oil to our markets. But that’s not good enough. They dream about cars ran on solar power and no need for oil. The reality is that we are not there yet. One day maybe, but we have to worry about our oil needs at this moment. They always talk about our “oil addiction” and it seems like they are making us go cold turkey.
So what can be done? It seems like gasoline prices are going to continue to rise because the morons in Washington aren’t working on any real solutions. Hillary Clinton and John McCain are pushing political garbage with their “gas tax holiday” idea. You think that it will matter? You think that the oil companies won’t just raise prices higher or that the gas tax won’t be substituted elsewhere? It’s typical political garbage folks. If you’ve been thinking about getting in shape now is a good time to get ready for $12 a gallon gasoline. These morons on capital hill couldn’t careless about that gaping hole in your wallet. I’ve been wanting a new bike anyway. With the money I’ll save from not buying gas I should be able to get top of the line.
