Intelligent Conversations With an Atheist

My wife’s brother and I often talk about random things when we go to visit her parents. It’s always interesting to hear what he has to say considering he doesn’t agree with me on most topics. It’s always a friendly debate and more times than not we don’t leave with different opinions but we’re enlightened because we took the time to listen to one another’s opinions. While I’m not sure if he’d consider himself an atheist or an agnostic, it’s clear he doesn’t believe how I do and because of that we don’t see eye to eye on abortion.

Abortion is not an issue I take lightly, it is the number one reason I got involved in politics. The response I typically get from him is that a fetus is not a human being. A human being has a mind and can process thought. A fetus is just a blob of cells and there’s nothing wrong with aborting a blob of cells. There are problems with believing that and I’ll explain my thoughts to you just as I did to him.

Why do people get abortions? More times than not an abortion is preformed because the woman does not want the child. The woman can’t afford the child or they think they are too old to have another child. Notice something? Women don’t have abortions because they can’t afford a blob of cells or don’t want another blob of cells. No matter how early into the pregnancy they are the woman is contemplating aborting a child, they realize that, that is the problem with the blob explanation. People realize that the blob is a child, they then have to explain why it is acceptable to kill a child.

Beyond that a fetus starts to develop the brain and nervous system just three weeks into it’s life. Long before that, during week two, the fetus has developed a heart and it now beats. Does a blob having a beating heart? If I cut off a chunk of your hair and throw it to the ground like so many do to a baby is it basically the same? It’s not. Those for abortion are left with a new struggle. You can no longer say that a fetus is not a child. You now have to convince us all that killing a child is acceptable. Go ahead, I’m listening.
