You are currently reading part one of the series “Politics and the New Media.” Make sure you read part two and three.

In this new series I want to take a look at the internet and how it has effected this years election. For those that took advantage of the various resources of the internet there were many benefits. For those that fell behind it was a sore loss indeed. For Ron Paul the internet has been the one place that his revolution was allowed to spread like wildfire. Some candidates got it while others remained clueless. Paul was definitely someone that championed the New Media.

    Fundraising

The biggest affect that the internet has had on politics is the massive amount of resources available to candidates that not only allowed them to spread their message but to also raise funds in a way never seen in politics before. Out of all the candidates there were a couple that stood out above the rest.

Ron Paul, the Republican underdog, has led the way on how the internet should be used to benefit your campaign. Online, Paul’s force of passionate supporters are well known for overwhelming anything and everything that does, or doesn’t and should, involve Ron Paul. While Paul was constantly shut out from debates and seen as the underdog he rallied to raise over $34 million, most of which can be attributed to his online raising prowess.

Ron Paul can teach us a lot about how to run an online campaign. In the end however, all of the credit has to go to his supporters. Without the force of Paul supporters there would not have been that viral effect most of us have witnessed. Candidates can target specific mediums such as Myspace and Digg but in the end it’s up to their supporters to take the reigns. Even though Paul has officially dropped out of the race he was extremely successful, I’m sure his supporters would agree that his message was heard by many and in effect the Paul Revolution has only started.

Who do you think has taken advantage of the internet most successfully this campaign? Share your thoughts.

Make sure you subscribe the RSS, in the next part of the series we’ll talk about those that weren’t so successful online.
