This is part two of the series “Politics and the New Media.” Here is part one and here is part three.
Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul are the candidates I think of when it comes those that utilized the Internet most effectively. Barack Obama can attribute his success online directly to his success with younger voters. I feel Mike Huckabee did a respectable job because of the efforts he took to involve bloggers and other average Joe’s. Ron Paul was very successful because of his ability to rally his supporters around the cause, so good that he was the highlight of part one.
From this we’ll move onto those that completely failed to take advantage of the New Media and social media. Hillary Clinton was stuck in old politics all the way, this includes her stale attempt to tackle the online media. It’s not to say she didn’t raise any money or have people online pushing for her. The problem was that the emotion wasn’t there and therefore the viral effect from Paul and Obama were not seen from Hillary’s camp.
It’s surprising because Hillary launched her campaign online. This was supposed to signify the new era of politics. Instead it was a thin attempt to attack the hipsters. While Ron Paul’s supporters did all they could to attack the topics and remind people of their man and Obama’s were simply everywhere, Hillary was just a faint noise in the background. If you an Internet user you already knew Obama was the winner two months ago. That’s how thick the buzz is.
Hillary wasn’t the only one to fail to latch on to the new media. Other candidates have made some seriously pathetic attempts that in the end had to play a part in their inevitable withdrawal from the race. Dennis Kucinich would most likely go down as one of the worst of this year’s election. His hideous website alone would cause any downright designer to shoot themselves in the foot. It’s no wonder he lost, it’s not the 70’s anymore.
Who would you add to this list? Do you disagree? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
