High Food Costs Got You Down?

I’m not one to talk about people’s weight. I’m not massive but I do tip the scale a bit for my height. I wanted to say that because the following discussion may sound insensitive. I was perusing on Michelle Malkin’s website and saw a story that See-Dubya linked to that made me shake my head. It definitely gives you an unusual perspective on food costs and why, for some, it may not be the worst thing.
Let’s be honest. High food costs are hard on low income families. I know this because I am in a low budget family. I have never had a problem getting decent food at decent prices. It’s all about shopping for deals, buying local and staying away from junk food. So many people in America are overweight and cutting back on potato chips and snacking on something healthy instead is only going to benefit us all. Don’t think you can’t eat healthy for cheap. Like I mentioned, it’s all about being savvy and knowing what to buy.
The article I am pertaining to is a story running on the NPR website. The reason it stands out is the two people they interviewed for the basis of the article are, simply put, very overweight. With all do respect it’s people like this that can benefit from less meat and less ice cream. I know, I’ve been trying to cut down myself. It’s pure irony if you ask me. To get the full effect you only have to read the following excerpt with the photo to see what I mean.
The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer bags of groceries — $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now it’s more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like meat, and they don’t buy extras like ice cream anymore. Instead, they eat a lot of starches like potatoes and noodles.Hard times call for desperate measures. Buy bulk frozen vegetables, you can get a nice big back at Wal-Mart for about $5. Buy Bananas, drink fat free milk and fat free yogurt. Shop at a local ALDI if you have one—cheap but good food—and save yourself some money. Drive less, walk or ride the bus. Do what you have to. We all understand the higher costs are difficult but if you’re willing to put in some effort it won’t be as difficult. This is coming from personal experience. I’m currently out of work, I’ve been living off of very little money the past few months, get yourself together and get working. Life is hard. Learn to deal.
