Ron Paul, the candidate that shook things up during the primaries, has come out to endorse Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin for President. While the media is busy covering just the two major candidates things are getting heated up in the third party arena. It is very important to cover all political candidates and this announcement is an interesting one.
I have been keeping an out on Bob Barr for the past couple months and recently saw that he was seeking to tap Paul as his veep. He was obviously hoping to tap into Paul’s success and I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen which was beginning to look like nothing at all. Barr decided to snub a recent third party conference and had his own little counter conference. Barr criticized Paul and told him that he needs to pick a side. Well, Barr got his wish.
Baldwin is a real conservative and someone that I agree with on most issues. When it comes down to it I agree with Baldwin more than I do with McCain. It seems that our opposing views on the Iraq War and the war on terrorism in general is a big one but I happen to welcome Baldwin’s arguments and wish him the best. I’m not sure how much pull he will have but any light shown on a small government candidate is fine by me.
Here in Pennsylvania Baldwin isn’t even on the ballot. He trails behind Barr and others quite substantially in that arena. He was unable to receive the needed amount of signatures here and when he pushed for an extension he was denied. Baldwin is on the ballot in 37 states, Nader is on 46, Barr is on 45 and McKinney is on 32. It is unclear how much of an affect Baldwin will have on the race but it is clear that he will have more of an affect now that Paul has signed on.
Baldwin is the kind of guy that we need as president. Both John McCain and Barack Obama have a problem; big government. Either way you look at it they have some core values that are acceptable but they all end up growing the government and violating the constitution. One things for sure, the government does not need to be running our lives. There doesn’t seem to be a candidate that I fully agree with–that’s not unusual–but out of all of them I seem to agree with Baldwin more than I disagree. I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.
