Who I’m Voting For

I’ve been contemplating about where to align myself this November. I’ve never understood how anyone could be undecided about who to vote for when the candidates are usually so different. I haven’t had a hard time choosing between McCain and Obama. I’ve had a hard time deciding whether or not to vote for McCain or a third party candidate. McCain has some serious issues and I have never been fully comfortable with the idea of voting for such a maverick.

Then I start to think about Barack Obama. Barack’s platform basically reflects one of a socialist. The United States as we know it will begin to transform from a capitalism nation to a socialist nation under his control. It goes from nationalized health care to a country completely in the hands of it’s government. If there’s one thing I know for sure it’s that the government doesn’t need to be in charge of any more then absolutely necessary. The more private enterprise the better. The less the government intervenes the better (aka no bailouts.)

I have been thinking about voting third party quite extensively. I began to think the best route to take would be to thumb my nose at McCain for the sake of my conscious. I’ve gone as far as believing Chuck Baldwin should get my vote. Baldwin is the kind of guy that would be a great president on paper. Looking at his views on the issues reflect a pro-life conservative that is a strong believer in the constitution. Then you spend a little time with Google and realize he is a conspiracy theorist with some very radical views. The fact that Alex Jones has endorsed him and he thinks that is a good thing is a huge red flag. Ron Paul has always peeked my interest. He’s not someone I always agree with but he does get it right from time to time. I thought Baldwin would be along those same lines. Let’s just say Baldwin is a double dose of Paul and not someone I could vote for without being crazy first–or on a large dosage of drugs.

What I do like about the libertarian movement is it’s dedication to the constitution. The hard part for me to understand is why so many people are attracted to all of these conspiracy theories. Do I trust my government or feel that they always have my best interests in mind? Of course not. I don’t see how or why they would be involved in something like the termination of 3,000 people on 9/11. I actually see this theory as very silly and damaging to the libertarian cause. I’ll take the small government and low taxes but why in the world do I need to believe the government is watching my every move and killing people just for the hell of it?

It may seem weird for someone to be endorsing a candidate this late into the game. I hope it is a testament to how hard I have thought about this decision. The problem that I have is jumping to conclusions too quickly, blogging about them and finding myself contradicting myself as I change my mind. I am always looking at the situation and allowing myself to take in new evidence. I decided to not officially endorse someone until I have really thought it through. That way I don’t send two many different signals out to you and leave you confused. If you’ve been a reader for the entire ride I’m sure I have confused you more than once so I want you to know I am simply sharing my thoughts with you as I develop my opinion. I suppose I should stop doing that.

You can look at an election a couple of different ways. You can look at it as an opportunity to protest the country’s current situation or as a way to show support for the views of your chosen candidate. I see this election as the most important one of our time. With the current Senate a Democrat would go about completely changing the way our country is run. Practically throwing the Constitution out the window. You also have to consider the possibility of one or more justices being chosen. It’s clear the type of judge Barack Obama would chose.

John McCain has shown himself a worthy leader. The actions that he has taken during his candidacy has revealed a president that will make the tough decisions without blinking. Some may have seen his decision to suspend his campaign to deal with the financial situation as sporadic–I happen to think it was partly political–but it is also evidence of a man that does what he feels is right for the country and not what will be popular. I see Obama doing the typical dance around the polls. That’s not the kind of President we need.

This is what it comes down to: vote against McCain for the sake of protesting against the system or getting behind the only one that represents any form of conservatism in this election that can actually win. It’s not about choosing the perfect person for the job. It’s more about choosing the most qualified man for the job. I know that Obama has a lot of flashy slogans and wonderful little dreams but they aren’t reality and are just socialist garbage. I don’t want the government playing the rule of robin hood for the sake of some perceived greater good.

Looking at the current situation of the country, the events that are bound to unfold in the next couple years and being in a time of war, I see no one other then John McCain that is fit for command. Beneath the political rhetoric, the promises of change and the flashy political moves John McCain is an integrous individual that will be a strong president. Nothing is ever black and white and I know McCain isn’t perfect. What I do know is that he is the best in the crowd by a long shot.
