Choosing McCain and How I Almost Decided Not To

I thought deep into the night. I was thinking about that crucial decision many of us are set to make on November 4th which is now just 12 days away. I had done my research and was working on an article to post to the blog. I take my public decisions very seriously so when I was finished writing the article I let it sit in the draft section for a little while. I wasn’t sure if I was making the right choice. “Can I publicly support this guy?” It wasn’t that I felt it was a bad decision but that some things about him bothered me. His policies seemed sound for the most part but there were some things hovering in the background that made me scratch my head. After some deep consideration and a couple more hours of research I decided to scrap the first article and start a new. Instead, I decided to endorse McCain. Yeah, I almost endorsed someone else.

No, it wasn’t Obama. It was Chuck Baldwin. I spent quite a bit of time considering who to vote for. It was a hard decision for me and took a lot longer than it should have. I am a political junkie and know the candidate’s policies very well. If I was going completely on policies I would definitely have come out for Baldwin. What bothered me about Chuck was the same thing that bothers me about all constitutionalists. They have this weird ability to attract the conspiracy theories. I don’t buy into all the 9/11 hooey and the fact that Alex Jones endorsed Baldwin is a bit too much for me. Not only that, Chuck was happy to get the endorsement and even calls for an investigation into the governments role in the attacks. Anyone so paranoid about their government that they believe anything that sounds remotely possible has some serious trust issues. Now, I’m not saying to trust the government blindly, but that you have to draw the line somewhere.

Sarah Palin also helped push me in the direction of McCain. I was very concerned as to whether or not John would run a conservative White House. I’m still not completely sure but with Sarah yelling in his ear when he makes decisions I am a bit happier with my decision. If Sarah was running for President I would have supported her from the beginning. Sure, John likes to call her a Maverick and act like she is just like him but that’s not true. Sure, she bucked her own party but unlike John she is a solid conservative without a single doubt. Pro-Gun, Pro-Life, Pro-Military, Pro-Kickin’-Ass conservative. Vice Presidential picks don’t usually matter but I have a feeling she is the only thing giving McCain a shot at the race. Great pick John.

I’m not really sure why I decided to write this article. If anything, it’s just how I am. I’m very open and want to discuss politics on a very straight level with you. Some people take elections far too lightly. I take them very serious and wanted to bring this out in the open. I still don’t know what I’m going to push when I get into the voting booth. It seems silly because I have been promoting McCain and endorsed him but I want to be frank with you. My insecurities about Obama have played a large part in my decision but at the same time I’m not 100% comfortable with any politician. So I picked the best route for our country. Baldwin is a great candidate. I would fully support him if it weren’t for the loons on his back, his position on the war in Iraq and for the fact that third parties are basically here for people to protest with.

So I want to encourage you to look at Chuck Baldwin. His conservative values make his policies very attractive to people like me. His stance on the war is definitely what sets us apart the most. That would probably be enough to scare away any right minded conservative but in all honesty I am more then ready to see us get out of there in the right manner. Baldwin is the most pro-life candidate running for President this year also. Usually the Republican Party has this locked down but McCain has been very disappointing with regards to this. If there is one movement that I could get behind without any conviction it would be this one. But, again, I really don’t understand what conspiracy theories have to do with it and that will always keep me from jumping on. I don’t think life would be better if I’m running around thinking the government has my house bugged and that aliens are going to rig the election. Sure, that’s silly but if there’s anything hurting the liberty movement it’s these people.

I’m not going to get into the reason why I am not a Libertarian. Baldwin is a respectable choice but until third parties are serious contenders I can not get behind them. It sounds silly but I chose to vote for the lesser of evils because if I don’t I am better off not voting at all. Within time things may change. I’m sure that some would say the reason they are not serious contenders is that too many people think like me. Perhaps that is why Ron Paul has decided to fight it out in the Republican Party. That is the right route to be taking and I commend him on his efforts to keep our government in check. I like to say that anyone for small government is a friend of mine. That’s a very true statement and I hope that constitutionalists continue to break out into the mainstream. If they can shake off the conspiracy junkies it would be a step in the right direction.

For whatever it is worth that is my humble opinion. No matter how many people email me telling me to vote Libertarian or for Baldwin the end result is that I am a conservative. I’ve thought about my beliefs in great depth. I’ve laid out all of my stances on the issues, have done my research into the policies and intentions of all political philosophies and I always come out realizing I am a conservative that much more. I have wondered and looked into Libertarianism and quickly realized it doesn’t work because I’d be considered a Liberventionalist. Funny, but a clear reminder of my core. I encourage you to do the exact same thing. Don’t be a conservative, a liberal or even a libertarian because you think you are one. Get to work on Google and really research all sides and find your best place. Only then can you really feel like you belong and make an effort for that cause. After all, we all like to feel like we belong.
